There are more active satellites in space today than ever before, and the number of satellites continues to multiply each year. This brings a ton of new capacity to orbit and gives satellite operators the ability to serve millions of new customers, businesses, and organizations around the world. Whether through organic growth, or strategic mergers (or both), leading global operators are scaling up their businesses in the quest for new revenue sources. At SATELLITE 2024, the CEOs on our Tuesday Opening General Session agreed that there is "enough room for everyone." This year's marquee session focuses on quality over quantity in an ultra-competitive environment. As operators take on more customers and utilize more bandwidth, how are they ensuring that they will meet the market's needs with secure, high-quality, high-performance service that sets them apart from competitors - especially those that are about to launch massive new systems of their own? Via Satellite Editorial Director Mark Holmes sits down with executives from five of the world's leading satellite operators to discuss their plans to improve the service experience for a rapidly growing number of customers.

The satellite industry stands at a turning point, where the relentless wave of disruption established paradigms, moving from voice and broadcasting to cutting edge connectivity and EO solutions dictating new models. New players are redefining the landscape, leveraging innovative approaches that challenge legacy systems. As the satellite industry faces a potential "Kodak moment", existing companies must adapt, or risk being left behind in this survival-of-the-fittest reality. Long-established companies could be uniquely positioned to be disruptors in this evolving landscape. With established infrastructure, deep market knowledge, financial resources, and the capacity to take risks, how can they best leverage the means to innovate and drive change effectively. What does it mean to be "fit" in this evolving ecosystem? Are silos stifling growth and collaboration across the industry? How can we break down these barriers? Associations have a vital role to play in bringing industry together, acting as catalysts for change, facilitating cross-sector collaboration, empowering new voices, and challenging the status quo to drive the industry forward.

For cruise line operators, there are two main factors in determining how to use satellites for passenger connectivity - performance and coverage. Today's leading NGSO satellite constellations have made progress in filling in coverage gaps in the Arctic and Antarctic Circle. The lower latency offered by LEO satellites, combined with the evolution of antenna systems and changes in IT usage have also enhanced passenger connectivity. Which satellite services can match or exceed passengers' performance and coverage expectations? Can emerging multi-orbit systems compete with the leading LEO-only services like Starlink? In this session, you'll hear directly from cruise line operators about what they're looking for in a satellite service to enhance passenger experiences in a market with surging demand.

Today's explosion of satellite bandwidth and new orbits is driving the digital transformation of satcom from basic bent pipes to processing nodes in the sky. But the transformation can only succeed if the ground segment, still mired in hardware solutions, can adapt to keep up with it - and do it cost-effectively, with near-term benefits as well as long-term ones to ground-based operators. In this panel discussion, teleport operators and technology executives discuss the pressure to change, the strategies being pursued by tech providers and how teleport operators approach the buying decision.

A new space environment needs new antenna technology. While we have seen a number of developments in this arena over recent years, a rise in next generation satellite technology means the ground segment needs to innovate more than ever before to cope with multi-orbits and cloud technology, amongst other complexities. New antenna technology is being introduced to respond to this changing landscape however much of it comes with new complexities and the potential for error. This session will discuss the challenges, complexities, and opportunities arising for antenna design. It will attempt to answer a couple of pressing questions such as: How can the industry balance the need for innovation with the risk of introducing too much complexity and consequently errors? Will some of these changes give way to a more level playing field for antenna manufacturers? How can we ensure better industry coordination?

Interoperability is crucial for the efficient and flexible operation of satellite communication networks and will allow the satellite industry to advance to its full potential. While standardized frameworks like the Digital Intermediate Frequency Interoperability (DIFI) consortium address this issue, manufacturers also need to be truly open about their "Open APIs." This session will cover both the importance of DIFI, and truly open APIs, and provide a "What if?" vision of the industry if true interoperability were to be achieved.

Earth observation satellite data provides a tactical advantage on the battlefield, just as is the case with satellite communication and navigation. These services and the leverage they provide were long reserved for the strongest national states and their militaries. Today, however, due to the progressive commercialization of space assets and democratization of space technologies, it is not necessary to own satellites in order to have access to the satellite data. The market is growing and also includes non-state agents, like private military companies (PMCs), who buy satellite data and use it for operational and tactical purposes. The Wagner Group has been present and actively fighting in Africa and during the first two years of the Russo-Ukrainian full-scale war. According to Yevgeny Prigozhin, the late leader of the Wagner Group, the PMC had access to ISR satellite data that helped them to obtain their goals in Africa long before February 2022. The Wagner Group's example shows that PMCs with access to satellite data become stronger, and non-state vs. state warfare, especially on the tactical level, becomes less asymmetrical and, therefore, more dangerous. The presentation will discuss the global market of satellite data available to PMCs, the legal framework regulating access, how it translates to reality, and what should be done to minimize the threat.

Advancements in the satellite industry, including mass production and the lower costs of launches, have led to the tremendous growth of communication satellite constellations launched (or planned to be launched) into Low Earth Orbit. This, coupled with the growing number of EO (Earth Observation) satellites, is dramatically increasing the amount of data that is gathered about our planet. Waiting for a satellite to travel over a terminal or teleport is no longer feasible for making time-sensitive decisions. Is space data relay the solution to this challenge? This panel discussion will include the advantages of free-space optical communications versus RF; how to the technology is currently being deployed and how commercial satellite operators are using the technology to build mesh networks in space.

Space Solar Power (SSP), or the harvesting of the sun's energy and beaming it to earth, has been studied at government agencies, universities, and other research organizations in the United States for more than half a century. Despite various SSP initiatives abroad, (e.g., European Space Agency, United Kingdom, Japan, and China) the concept has yet to reach fruition in the United States. Instead, efforts to develop SSP have been inconsistent and minimally funded. This panel will address the following questions: Where have we made progress? What is holding the U.S. back compared to other countries? How and why the U.S. should or should not invest and participate? What is the roadmap for SSP to become part of the larger global energy enterprise?
